I absolutely love cruising! Every trip I’ve taken has been amazing—easy, fun, and all-inclusive. But let’s be honest: trying to plan a family trip often hits the same roadblocks. Whether it’s someone who hates the idea of “being stuck on a ship,” someone who is nervous about crowds, or someone who’s seen that documentary, sometimes a cruise just isn’t the right fit. When you want to give the gift of travel this year, but the ship is a no-go, it’s time to think outside the cruise. If this is you, what about a different kind of trip - something more focused, unique, or experiential?
The Perfect Mix: La Fortuna, Costa Rica
Instead of a ship, offer the gift of The Perfect Mix: relaxation to rival a cruise paired with bucket-list tours. I love La Fortuna, Costa Rica. Here, you can search for sloths in the wild or enjoy a night walk with tree frogs—true adventure! For relaxation, the active Arenal Volcano feeds stunning, naturally warm hot springs resorts, where you can play and dine just like on a cruise. Quick tips: Pack sturdy, ankle-covering boots for jungle tours (it’s home to some snakes!), and remember you can buy a less-expensive day pass to the hot springs if you book accommodation elsewhere. If you are traveling with children, keep in mind that some of the hot springs resorts are more child friendly, i.e. water slides, etc.

UK, Singapore, or Dubai Anyone?
Alright, if “hot springs and frogs” isn’t thrilling enough, let’s pivot to the Gift of True Adventure—a truly epic, global experience. Sometimes the perfect family trip is one that offers mind-blowing contrasts, from the English countryside to futuristic cityscapes. Get ready for a high-energy tour with these three uniquely modern and vibrant global destinations: Folkestone UK, Singapore, and Dubai.

The Coastal Gem: Folkestone, UK
Skip the usual stops and discover Folkestone, a vibrant coastal gem just an hour from London. This town has undergone an artistic revival, featuring the massive Folkestone Artworks (the UK’s largest urban outdoor exhibit). The historic Harbour Arm—once a railway terminal—is now a bustling social hub perfect for seafront strolling, food, and events. For a truly unique night out, I’ll ensure you get the secret code to enjoy The Speakeasy hidden inside The Potting Shed! Quick Tip: Since air conditioning isn’t universal, I’ll make sure your accommodations match your comfort needs.

Singapore: A FINE City
Singapore loves its rules, so much so that locals jokingly call it “A FINE City”—a witty nod to the fact that you can incur a penalty for everything from chewing gum to jaywalking. Don’t let this reputation scare you off, though! I can personally attest to the local humor when I jaywalked, froze mid-step under the gaze of two police officers, and was promptly waved on with a laugh. The city is orderly, but the spirit is warm. While Singapore is a vast topic, for an exceptional adventure outside the cruise itinerary, you must know about the Singapore Night Safari. Having traveled across five continents, I can definitively say this is one of the top five most memorable things I have ever done. This is the truly unique, once-in-a-lifetime experience you’re looking for! Quick Tips for “A FINE City”:

The Oasis of Opulence: Dubai’s Golden Standard
The Burj Al Arab Jumeirah is often called the world’s only seven-star hotel—but that’s actually a myth. A seriously impressed journalist coined the term to describe its blinding opulence and personalized care, as the international rating system tops out at five stars. Still, I can personally confirm: the entire region’s commitment to extreme luxury is palpable everywhere, even if you never step foot inside that signature structure. Set aside any preconceptions—you’d be missing out on a lovely and safe place to visit, rich with culture and beauty. I loved my time in the Middle East, and here are some things not to be missed.
When visiting Dubai, architectural landmarks and luxury are the main events. For scale and grandeur, the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, and the mesmerizing Dubai Fountain are must-sees. The adjacent Dubai Mall serves as the city’s premier shopping and leisure hub, home to elite boutiques like Louis Vuitton and CHANEL, alongside the massive Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo—all underscoring the region’s commitment to extreme luxury.

Proximity is also a major perk of the Middle East. Consider a side trip to the beautiful and welcoming Bahrain, just a short 20-25 minute flight away. Like Dubai, Bahrain offers luxury alongside compelling history, including the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bahrain Fort and the impressive Al Fateh Grand Mosque. Quick Tips: For both men and women, the most respectful rule of thumb is to keep your shoulders and knees covered in public. This applies especially when visiting religious sites, government buildings, or more traditional areas.
